URSULA, A FORMER college basketball player, knows all about living with pain, specifically the pain of osteoarthritis. When I first met her, she told me, âAt forty-one, I am living proof that you donât have to be old to feel wear and tear on your joints. Not only do my knees hurt when I get out of bed each morning, but after doing yard work or even standing for a short period of time, I have to soak in our Jacuzzi and take pain medication for relief.â
Ursulaâs story is one you may relate to: she was a star athlete as a teenager and young adult, had a sedentary career as a software engineer, experienced a weight gain of 40 pounds since having two children, and now her knees hurt âall day, every day.â While she knows that exercise is vital for good health, Ursula could not remember the last time she really tried to get back in shape and lamented, âWhen I exercise, my knees hurt so badly, I immediately stop. Why should I inflict more pain than I have to?â
I explained to Ursula how her weight and sedentary lifestyle contributed to the arthritic knee pain, and suggested that she consider starting the Pain-Free Diet and exercise plan to lose weight and strengthen the muscles that support the knees. Desperate for relief, Ursula started the Pain-Free Diet last year. In 21 days, she lost 6 pounds and was riding a stationary bike for more than 30 minutes each day. After following the program for six months, Ursula lost a total of 21 pounds and dropped 4 inches from her waistline. She felt in control of her life for the first time in years. Her husband, Bill, who had suffered back pain from a ruptured disc, lost 36 pounds on the program and 3 inches from his waist. And her mother, Ellen, who had back pain from a fractured vertebra, lost 18 pounds and 2 inches from her waist. Today, Ursula, Bill, and Ellen are thrilled that they can be as active as they want to be.
